The North Korean Foreign Ministry criticized the United States for expanding joint military exercises with North Korea Sur which it claims are practice for a possible invasion, and warned of “more powerful follow-up measures” in response.

The ministry statement came when the US and South Korea conduct air drills with more than 200 combat aircraft, including its advanced F-Fighter Aircraft 35, while intensifying their defense posture in the face of increased weapons testing and the growing nuclear threat from North Korea.

North Korea has increased its weapons demonstrations at a record pace this year, launching more than 40 ballistic missiles, included intercontinental ballistic missiles under development and an intermediate-range missile fired over Japan.

In such a context, The United States and South Korea resumed large-scale military exercises this year after reducing or suspending them in recent years as part of the efforts to create a diplomatic space with Pyongyang and due to the pandemic.

For its part, North Korea maintains that its testing activities are a warning amid joint military exercises. But some experts say Pyongyang has also used the drills as an opportunity to test new weapons systems, increase its nuclear capability and increase its influence in future dealings with Washington and Seoul.

According to international agencies, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea, it said that the military exercises exposed the United States as the “main culprit in the destruction of peace and security” and was ready to take “all necessary measures” to defend itself against external military threats.

“If the United States continuously persists in serious military provocations, North Korea will consider more powerful follow-up measures”, said the spokesman
