Shanghai’s Disneyland resort abruptly closed its doors on Monday as Chinese authorities imposed an instant lockdown, thus trapping attendees, who are not allowed to leave until they test negative for COVID-19.

China is the last major economy to commit to a zero COVID policy, and authorities have imposed sudden lockdowns, mass testing, and lengthy quarantines in an effort to crack down on emerging outbreaks.

But the new variants have tested the ability of local officials to quell outbreaks faster than they can spread, leaving much of the country living under ever-changing scenarios of COVID restrictions.

Visitors to the Shanghai Disney theme park are not allowed to leave “until the tests in situ give a negative result”, said the government of the city.

He added that those who have visited the park since Thursday must obtain three negative tests in three successive days and “avoid participating in group activities”.

The theme park and tourist complex of 390 Acres includes Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park. The resort had previously said it was operating at reduced capacity due to coronavirus restrictions.

“We will notify guests as soon as we have a confirmed date to resume operations,” Disney said.
