The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, declared to be “happy, happy” for the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva in the elections on Sunday in Brazil and said he admired the electoral system in that country.
“(Lula’s victory) makes me very happy, I’m happy, happy, happy”, said the president during his morning press conference from the National Palace.
López Obrador thus celebrated the victory of the Brazilian politician in the presidential elections on Sunday and highlighted the “lesson” left by the functioning of the electoral institute of Brazil.
“ Yesterday’s election was very instructive, it’s the lesson of the election
, I think that the lesson of the election is the proper functioning of the electoral institute in Brazil”, he indicated.
He affirmed that even though Brazil has some 148 million voters and is much larger in territory, the results of the election were held in a short time.
“ The incredible thing is that 2 hours after closing the booths they already had the 90 % of votes counted, at 2 hours. It is as if we thought that the booths in Mexico close at 6 and at 8 we already have the 90 % of the result. Here you have to wait until the preliminary”, he criticized.
He pointed out that this is due to electronic voting, which he hopes can be implemented in Mexico.
“Yes, it is necessary to analyze how they do it, I think there is an electronic vote, yes, there should be an electronic vote and a direct vote”, he said.
The Mexican president extolled that the Brazilian people are “well aware” that things will go well for them despite the fact that on Sunday morning the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, had expressed on Twitter that Lula was “a danger to Brazil” and had called to vote for Jair Bolsonaro.
“The Brazilian people are very aware, blessed people, because they are going to do very well, there is going to be equality, humanism I am very happy and the Brazilians were also an example, because even President Bolsonaro g he was silent, he locked himself up, he didn’t do it (that he didn’t recognize), but he stayed quiet, so we’re going to move on”, he said.
López Obrador took the opportunity to make fun of the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, of whom, ironically, “everything that touches it comes out”, in reference to the support that the author has shown to right-wing politicians and who have lost the recent elections in Latin America.
The Mexican president has always shown his sympathy with Lula, whom he called a “blessing” and “alternative” for Brazil last July.
Furthermore, the former Brazilian president visited Mexico last March, when he met with López Obrador, who in 2021 celebrated the annulment of the prison sentences against the former Brazilian president, who received sentences that amounted to almost 15 years in prison for corruption in 2017.
