The Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Tuesday that The UFW Foundation has been selected as a recipient of the Farm and Food Worker Grant Program (FFWR) to provide a one-time payment of $600 dollars to farmworkers affected by the Covid pandemic.

The UFW Foundation reported in a statement that it will have seven subrecipient organizations that will also provide critical outreach and stimulus application support for farmworkers.

The program was designed to provide relief to frontline farmworkers, meatpacking workers, and grocery store workers for expenses incurred due to the COVID pandemic-19.

Details of the eligibility criteria to qualify for the one-time payment of $600 dollars will be available soon. The start date of the application period has not yet been determined.

Relief payments will be available to eligible frontline workers in agriculture, meatpacking, and grocery store work during the period that runs from 27 January 2020 until the emergency period has been declared.

Eligibility requirements include identity and employment verification, and immigration status is not a factor in qualifying for this relief.

There is no cost to apply for Relief for Agricultural and Food Workers (FFWR).

Only organizations that receive USDA grant applications can process Food and Agricultural Worker Relief (FFWR) applications. Prospective applicants are reminded that do not provide personal documents or any form of identification to unapproved organizations. The organizations listed on the USDA website are the only entities selected to provide these funds.

The UFW Foundation worked tirelessly to promote the legislation that would empower USDA to support farmworkers during the pandemic, and took into account that Congressional COVID relief packages-19 failed to provide pandemic assistance to millions of undocumented workers, many of whom pay taxes through individual taxpayer identification numbers and continued to work during the pandemic, such as farmworkers.

That’s why the UFW Foundation has been advocating for Covid pandemic relief for workers. farmworkers, making it known that even though farmworkers are essential workers, they have not been treated as such. Also, unlike other workers, federal farmworkers do not qualify for overtime pay, typically receive low wages, and experience poor working conditions.
