Why charging your electric car at night could eventually be more expensive in the US

Ronald Ortega

The future of the automotive market is electric. There is no discussion, since reducing carbon emissions has become a necessity against the clock for the well-being of the planet, therefore, in a few years (after 2045) it is expected that the vehicle industry will only produce cars 100% electrified.

Of course, the greater the demand for electric cars, the greater the presence of chargers is required. The United States is one of the most advanced countries in terms of electrified mobility, where Tesla Superchargers are an example of this.

Recharging a car with these characteristics is not a problem in the nation, since there are various points located nationwide, and also, for some time now there have been home and portable chargers, in case of emergency.

What could result in a problem is the cost that the inhabitants would have to pay of the country to replenish the energy of their cars at night. A study by Stanford University and published in the journal Nature states that during this time of the day it will become more expensive.

The reason

Everything is due to demand . Recharging the car at the entrance of the house is not usually so expensive due to the low demand, now, the greater the number of owners of electrified vehicles, the greater the demand , and therefore, prices would increase according to the study.

“All states may need to rethink electricity price structures as their electric vehicle charging needs increase and changes its network”, says Siobhan Powell, lead author of the study.

In a complicated scenario, demand would increase by up to 50%, placing the end of cheap nightly recharges very close. The authors of the research even recommend charging more during the day, either at work or at service stations.

“Shifting home drivers to daytime charging improves all grid impact metrics, including ramp, non-fossil fuel generation use, storage requirements, and emissions. This information is solid at different levels of EV adoption”, points out part of the investigative writing.
