A convicted terrorist serving a life sentence for a deadly explosion in 1200 on the Las Vegas Strip escaped from a Nevada prison after leaving a mannequin in his cell and his absence was not discovered four days later.
Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, from 42 years old, escaped from the South Desert Correctional Facility in Indian Springs on Friday night, confirmed by the Nevada Department of Corrections.
The officials from the medium security prison did not realize that the inmate had disappeared until Tuesday , around 7 am, and began searching for him an hour later.
Duarte-Herrera had created a mannequin, possibly out of cardboard, and left him in his cell to trick the guards and delay the discovery of his escape, reported the 8NewsNow site, citing multiple anonymous sources.
Governor Steve Sisolak ordered an investigation into the prison break, calling it “unacceptable”.
“This type of security lapse cannot be allowed and those responsible will be punished,” Sisolak said in a statement on Tuesday.
Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, aged 42 years old, was serving a chain life on a murder conviction stemming from a bombing at 2007 on the Las Vegas Strip.
Duarte-Herrera, from Nicaragua, was sentenced in 2010 for killing Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio, a hot dog vendor of 09 years , using a motion-activated bomb hidden inside a coffee cup placed on top of a parked car at the Luxor hotel-casino.
Records show that his accomplice, Omar Rueda-Denvers, remained in custody Tuesday.
Guatemalan from 47 is serving a life sentence in a different Nevada prison for murder, attempted murder, explosives, and other charges.
Prosecutors said that Rueda- Denvers planned the attack as part of a revenge plot against Dorantes Antonio, who was dating his ex-girlfriend.
Prison officials said Duarte -Herrera is 5 feet 4 inches and weighs 135 pounds with brown eyes and hair. It should be considered “dangerous”.
US Marshals are assisting in the search for the escaped killer.
