After the Supreme Court made the decision to annul Roe v. Wade, many large companies have pledged to provide support and financial assistance to female employees who choose to have an abortion and reside in states that prohibit it.
As of Friday, the annulment of the law that protected the federal constitutional right to abortion, leaves the decision in the hands of state legislation, so, almost immediately, various state officials began to implement or manage to make new abortion bans effective.
Now, millions of people seeking abortions will be forced to travel across borders to access the procedure, which would add to the cost of an already expensive health care service.
For many, employers’ benefits packages may be the only way to pay a abortion.
In response, corporations, some with headquarters or offices in states controlled by Republicans, are taking steps to pay for travel expenses.
Several companies began to announce it weeks before the failure was known and this Friday many more have joined. Here are some companies that offer extended staff assistance in states that restrict abortion care:
Microsoft
Expanded its financial support for abortions and gender-affirming care, to include coverage of travel expenses for such services.
Apple
Your benefits package allows employees to travel out of state to receive medical care if it is not available in your home state.
Goal
Intends to offer travel expense reimbursement “to the extent permitted by law” for employees seeking health and reproductive services Out of state.
Yelp
Your existing health care plan pays women, family and couples to travel n outside of states with strict abortion laws.
Disney
They will also receive coverage to access the same care in another state. The benefit covers family planning and decisions related to pregnancy.
Uber
Your insurance plans already cover reproductive health benefits, including abortion and travel expenses to access medical care. It also said it will reimburse drivers sued under state law for providing transportation to a clinic through the app.
Netflix
Offers travel reimbursement coverage for full-time US employees and their dependents who need to travel for health care treatment, including abortions and gender-affirming care .
Bumble
The female-led dating app said it will support its female employees’ ability to access “the health care services they need,” including abortion care. A Bumble spokesperson added that the company will donate to the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Levi Strauss
Through his foundation he is making grants to the Center for Reproductive Rights , the Afiya Center and ARC-Southeast, which provides direct assistance to women and communities in need of care. Additionally, your employees may be reimbursed for travel expenses for services that are not available in their home state, including abortion. Part-time staff and others who are not included in the company’s benefit plan are also eligible for reimbursement.
Comcast-NBC Universal
Offers a health care travel benefit for all employees that covers up to $4,000 per trip, up to three trips per year, with a maximum coverage limit of $10,000 by year.
Warner Brothers Discovery
On Friday it expanded the health care benefit options to include expenses for employees and their covered family members who need to travel to access abortion and other reproductive care.
JPMorgan Chase
Your health care benefits have long covered care for the abortion. And starting in July, abortion will be included in the company’s health care travel benefit that covers services that can only be obtained away from home.
