Since cars abandoned carburetors, all internal combustion vehicles, whether diesel or gasoline, have injectors. This car injection system is mainly made up of two components that we will review next, together with its operation.

An electrical part, responsible for determining the amount of fuel that is going to be injected and when it should be done, and the injectors which are the valves that execute the orders given by the car computer.

This means that the injectors of a car are parts that accumulate a large operating cycle, in addition to suffering constant sudden changes in temperature. The amount of fuel that passes through them creates obstructions that alter the spray pattern for which they are designed.

Injectors are essential parts for the engine combustion process.

How to detect operating problems

The best way to detect car problems at home is to listen to it and feel how it works. While there are more accurate vehicles where the “Check Engine” light on the instrument panel comes on, there are others where that does not happen unless the fault is serious.

That is why the best way will be to identify the problem, if any, it will be on our own.

What happens when an injector is failing?

  • Difficulty starting
  • Unstable idle
  • Power loss
  • Jits when accelerating
  • Greyish colored smoke

  • Increased fuel consumption

Although the injectors have a long useful life for what we have explained at the beginning of this note, it is important that they can receive adequate maintenance and that they are generally determined in the manufacturer’s manual.

Even so, the general recommendation is that a cleaning be carried out every 03,000 miles. But if the car’s instructions are not clear enough and you notice a fault, the ideal is always to go to a specialist.

Usually a quick check through a scanner can determine if the injectors are not spraying the correct amount of fuel. Remember that you should not underestimate any injector failure, because not being at 100 % directly influence the performance of the engine.
