UVALDE – The Democratic candidate for governor of Texas, Beto O’Rourke, interrupted a press conference held by the governor on Wednesday Greg Abbott on the massacre that occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
The applicant had to be removed from the auditorium, but not before insulting and blaming Abbott for the tragedy that claimed the life of 19 children and two adults this Tuesday.
O’Rourke could not contain himself and headed to the stage where Governor Abbott was giving his remarks on the need to implement more mental health programs in the state to try to avoid incidents like the one in Uvalde.
“You are not doing anything… This is completely predictable when you choose not to do anything about it, this (tragedy) is upon you”, O’Rourke yelled at the governor.
Some people who were on stage began to yell at the candidate to sit down and that the place was not appropriate for politics.
O’Rourke continued with the insults and had to be removed from the scene.
A representative of the candidate’s team told the media that despite O’Rourke’s emotional reaction, the confrontation was not planned.
The Democratic candidate was there at the invitation of some relatives of the victims who asked him to accompany them to the Abbott conference.
O’Rourke followed up with his strong statements outside the venue.
“He (Abbott) says that this could not be predicted. It is totally predictable, and I can predict that it will continue to happen when you have a governor who does not take a position in favor of the people of Texas,” O’Rourke added in statements to reporters.
The candidate also mentioned Abbott’s scheduled presentation this Friday at the National Rifle Association convention in Houston.
In the shooting, the alleged gunman Salvador Ramos used an AR-style rifle after he “barricaded himself inside a classroom” and fired against students and teachers.
Abbott has sponsored laws that facilitate access to weapons. A few months ago he approved a law that came into force on September 1 that allows people to carry guns without a permit.
