Police said the manhunt is underway to capture a gunman who shot a man in an unprovoked attack on a Manhattan-bound subway train.
Daniel Enríquez, of 48 years old, I was riding the Q train to Manhattan on Sunday morning. A family member stated that he is a son of Mexican immigrants with a master’s degree from New York University and a career in finance. The police have no idea why he would be the target of gun violence.
“According to witnesses, the suspect was pacing back and forth in the same train car and, without provocation, pulled out a gun and fired at close range as the train crossed the Manhattan Bridge,” New York Police Chief Kenneth Corey said. .
The shooter then fled to the Canal Street station and went on the run. Police say there are plenty of surveillance videos to review, but they have yet to share an image of the man they’re looking for.
Enríquez was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.
The operator of that Q train issued a statement via TWU, describing his effort to apply chest compressions to the injured man and saying:
“I went to work expecting to do my normal job, not expecting to be the first person in a shooting, trying to help. One person who was shot, someone with a gunshot wound. We are not trained for that. How can we mentally prepare for something like this?”, he told ABC.
Police are reviewing the video and asking witnesses to the shooting to come forward. They hope to develop clues that lead to a quick arrest so commuters on the subway can feel a little safer as they head to work during the week.
