MEXICO CITY – At least two gunmen shot and killed the activist and lawyer Cecilia Monzón this Saturday , while driving in her vehicle through the streets of San Pedro Cholula, in the central Mexican state of Puebla, local media reported.
According to the information, the also feminist was hit by a couple of assassins traveling on a motorcycle who shot him at least three times, an attack that caused his death.
Until now, the State Prosecutor’s Office has not ruled on the crime .
Cecilia Monzón was known in the public sphere for her political activity. She was a supporter of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and also a candidate for the municipal presidency of San Pedro Cholula for the Green Ecologist Party (PVEM).
The former official dedicated her life to defending women’s cases in situations of violence or abuse, such as physical attacks or demands for alimony; In addition, it evidenced the omissions of the penal system and failures in justice that are committed against those who are part of the political sphere in Puebla.
Monzón was a victim of the obstacles that exist in the Mexican judicial system to resolve issues with a gender perspective, as a complaint for alimony against the PRI member Javier López Zavala, father of her son, was pending.

After the crime, politicians and friends mourned the death of the activist, including the mayor of San Pedro Cholula, Paola Angón, who offered the job in a coordinated manner to solve the crime.
“I strongly condemn the cunning attack that took the life of Cecilia Monz on. My government will work in close coordination with the Puebla Prosecutor’s Office and with the instances that are necessary, to find the intellectual and material authors of this attack,” the official said on her Twitter account.
Meanwhile, the counselor of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres), Lizeth Mejorada, made a call to punish those responsible.
“I am dismayed by the murder of my friend and defender @monzon_cecilia. Governor @MBarbosaMX and @FiscaliaPuebla I make a call as Counselor of @inmujeres to investigate and not leave this crime unpunished. The first few hours are vital and her son deserves justice,” she asserted.
Likewise, the Citizen Observatory of Sexual and Reproductive Rights AC (Odesyr,) lamented the murder of the lawyer and activist and demanded the clarification of the facts to the authorities.
“The execution of our friend @monzon_cecilia hurts our hearts and we demand the immediate resolution of this crime like each and every one of the women that the @FiscaliaPuebla and the governor @MBarbosaMX have left unprotected from justice”, specified the organism.
