Joe Biden: Finland and Sweden meet all the requirements to enter NATO

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, expressed this Thursday his “strong support” for Finland’s requests and Sweden to enter NATO, by ensuring that these countries “meet all the requirements to enter” the Alliance.

Biden also announced that this Thursday he will begin the process for the US Congress to “rapidly” ratify the requests for entry of these Nordic countries into the Atlantic Alliance, a necessary requirement to complete the accession process.

After meeting at the White House with his Finnish counterpart, Sauli Niinistö, and the Swedish Prime Minister, Magdalena Andersson, the president assured that his requests have the “full, total and complete support of the United States.”

“This is a victory for democracy”, said Biden about the internal process that has These countries, traditionally “non-aligned”, have followed to make the decision to approach NATO, as a consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Finland and Sweden will make NATO stronger,” added the president, who assured that this alliance is “relevant, effective and is needed more now than ever” in the face of Russia’s “aggression.”

Without mentioning Turkey’s opposition to the entry of both countries into the Alliance, Biden stressed that the two Nordic countries “meet every NATO requirement, by far.”

The US government will deliver this Thursday to the country’s Congress “reports on the access to NATO of both countries, so that the Senate can act quickly and effectively to advise and consent to (the amendment of the) Treaty” foundation of the Alliance, Biden explained.

This step is necessary to expand NATO, and the leader of the Republican minority in Senad or, Mitch McConnell, hoped this week that this process, which requires a two-thirds majority in the upper house, will be completed before Congress recesses in August.
