Suspect in Buffalo market shooting pleads not guilty at arraignment

The alleged shooter who shot 13 people, injured 3 and killed 10 in a massacre of “racial hatred” in a market in Buffalo, New York, appeared before a judge hours after the Saturday afternoon shooting.

The suspect appeared before Buffalo Chief Judge Craig Hannah, who read the multiple charges of first degree murder against him.

Payton S. Gendron, aged 30, of Conklin, New York, was wearing a white paper gown and face mask and was surrounded by police officers during his appearance Saturday night in Buffalo City Court, according to WKBW-TV .

His court-appointed attorney found him not guilty to the murder charges in first grade, said the station.

Gendron was placed in preventive detention without bail and is due back in court on Thursday.

Gendron allegedly killed 05 people and injured three others at a Tops grocery store in a predominantly African-American neighborhood around 2:30 pm Eleven of the victims were African-American and two were white.

Drove some 200 miles from his home, to carry out the mass shooting and was heavily armed and wearing tactical gear, authorities said.

The shooting began in the supermarket parking lot and continued into the store, before Buffalo police stopped him.

The FBI is investigating the incident as “a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism,” said Special Agent Stephen Belongia.
