Emiliano Sala, Argentine footballer, former Nantes player, who died in February 2019 in a terrible plane crash. This Wednesday in the match between Nice and Saint Etienne, the fans made chants mocking the death of the Argentine, this after the team lost the final of the French Cup against Nantes.
Nice defeated Saint Etienne 4-2 in Ligue 1, and from the 9th minute of the match the chants against the Argentine began to be heard. “He is an Argentine, who doesn’t swim well, Emiliano underwater, Emiliano underwater” with the rhythm of a song that Nantes fans had for the striker.
This chant comes after the 1-0 defeat against Nantes in the Coupe de France, but it has caused quite a bit of repudiation within French football and even among members of the Nice team who do not support this type of gestures.
“If they come to insult the dead or throw bottles, let them stay at home. We will win matches without them”, said Christophe Galtier, coach of Nice at the press conference after the match.
“OGC Nice condemns in the strongest terms the song about Emiliano Sala heard on Wednesday night at the Allianz Riviera. The club does not recognize its values or those of the entire red and black family in this unthinkable and abject provocation of a minority of its fans. OGC Nice sends its support to the family and loved ones of Emiliano Sala”, the French team said in a brief statement.
Emiliano Sala died in 2019, after he inhaled carbon monoxide from the plane that was in poor condition on his way to Cardiff his new team after being a legend at Nantes in Ligue 1.
Due to his death, David Henderson, who had organized the flight, was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
