The Champions League that is in progress, the 2022-2022, will be the last to be played with the format known to all, since this Tuesday UEFA officially announced a new format of the competition, having as main variant that they will now play 36 teams instead of 28.

UEFA has just confirmed the next format of the Champions League as of the season 2024/25 with several significant changes from what was said a few months ago:

Another of the most outstanding changes, although quite controversial for some, is that now the tournament will reward the leagues that have had the best performance by granting them one more quota , in this sense, the Premier League and LaLiga could have up to 5 teams qualified for the next edition of the Champions League.

The first phase will now have 8 matches for each team instead of 6. The Europa League will also emulate this format, and the Conference League will have 6 games in its initial phase.

This change occurs mainly due to the extension to 36 teams where the established group stage concept will be eliminated and implemented a single league phase that will include all participating teams. Each team will play four home games and four away games against different rivals.

The teams that finish among the first eight places will automatically qualify for the round of 16, while those that have been between ninth and Twenty-fourth place will play a two-leg tie where the winner will qualify for the round of 16.
