The Qatari news network Al Jazeera broadcast this Wednesday (. 05.2022) a statement accusing Israel of having “cold-bloodedly assassinated” the Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh (51 ), one of the most prominent of that station in Arabic, during a raid by the Israeli Army on a refugee camp in the city of Jenin, north of the occupied West Bank.

“In a tragic premeditated murder that violates international laws and norms, the Israeli occupation forces, in cold blood, killed our reporter Shireen Abu Akleh”, says the statement from Al Jazeera, whose headquarters is in Doha. The journalist died after a bullet hit her in the head, while another fellow journalist, Ali al-Samudi, was shot in the back and his condition is stable, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

“We condemn this heinous crime, through which it is intended to prevent the media from carrying out its message, and we hold the Israeli Government and the occupying forces responsible for the murder of the late colleague Shireen”, notes the chain, which called on the international community to condemn and hold accountable “the Israeli occupation forces for deliberately attacking and killing our colleague Shireen Abu Akleh”.

“Terrorism sponsored ”

The deputy foreign minister of Qatar, Lolwah Al Khater, assured on Twitter that the Israeli troops shot the journalist “in the face”, despite the fact that she was wearing a press vest and a helmet, adding that “this terrorism sponsored by Israel must stop, and the unconditional support for that country must end.”

The Israeli Army indicated that during the raid on the refugee camp, its forces were attacked by “armed suspects ”, so the soldiers opened fire. “The Army is investigating what happened, in particular the possibility that a journalist was hit by live fire from a Palestinian,” the institution said. The Israeli Army denied that it deliberately fired against journalists and put on the table the idea of carrying out a joint investigation with the Palestinians.

The Palestinian Authority, meanwhile, described what happened as an “execution” as part of Israeli efforts to hide the “truth” about Your occupation. Hamas, meanwhile, which controls Gaza, said what happened was “a premeditated assassination.” The death of Shireen Abu-Aqleh occurs almost a year after the destruction -by Israel- of the Jala tower, where the offices of the Qatari channel in the Gaza Strip were located.
