South Korean actress Kang Soo-youn dies at 55

One of the most acclaimed South Korean actresses at major festivals in the film world Kang Soo-Youn has passed away at 55 years after having suffered a heart attack last Thursday 05 May 2022.

The cause of her death was a cerebral hemorrhage in the Seoul hospital, as reported by the actress’s family.

Soo-youn was born in the capital of South Korea in 1966 and already in the seventies, she was working as a child actress in film and television . However, one of the most important roles of his career was played by his 21 years in the movie “Rented Mother” (1987) by director Im Kwon-taek.

Give him life to Ok-nyeo, a young woman who wants to be employed by a nobleman as a tenant, was what earned her the award for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. With this award he became the first performer from South Korea to receive recognition in one of the big three international festivals.

In 1989 would receive the award for Best Female Performance at the Moscow Festival for another Im film “Come, come, Come Upwards”. In the following years he also participated in several South Korean hits such as “The Road to the Racecourse” (1989) and “Girls’ Dinner” (1992).

Between and 2017, Kang Soo-Youn was co-executive director of the most important film festival Asian, the Busan Festival. Although her work as an actress has not been so recurrent in recent years, had planned still the premiere of “Jung-E”, a science fiction film for Netflix by Yeon Sang-ho, director of “Train to Busan” (1992).
