LAS VEGAS – Although above the ring he asked for a direct rematch with Dmitry Bivol, who had broken an undefeated streak of 16 fights by taking a unanimous decision, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez reconsidered a bit in the press conference post and said he will discuss with his team what they want to do next.
“Canelo” spoke about this subject in a meeting of 21 minutes with the press, in which he reiterated that he should have won the decision.
“That is what I want, that is what goes through my mind nothing else right now, but we will go home and see what comes next,” Álvarez said when asked about his plans for September, the month in which the third contest with Gennady Golovkin was virtually agreed, which has now been left in the air.
Canelo was dominant on Saturday night by a tremendous Dmitry Bivol, who was stronger than him, especially from the fifth round, but the fighter from Guadalajara insisted that the decision was not was fair for his cause.
“ I think I didn’t lose the fight, I think he won 4 or 5 rounds maximum. In the last few rounds I got a little tired, but obviously I feel good, I think I did things the way I had to do them,” he told reporters at the T-Mobile Arena.
“I lost a few rounds, in the last rounds I got a bit tired, I think maybe because of the weight I didn’t feel one hundred percent”, then detailed the undisputed super middleweight champion, who was trying to be crowned in the 175 pounds against a fighter who showed why he is the undefeated monarch.
“I think I’m obviously looking for the difficult fights: gaining weight, not being at the weight that I feel comfortable in 168 pounds, that’s why I gain weight, to look for more challenges, which is what I like and that’s how it is, that’s how boxing is, and that’s what I’m looking for: greatness,” said Álvarez, who pointed out that he needs to see the repetition well of the fight to understand what he did not do well.
Canelo Álvarez comments on the judges’ decision
When elaborating on the annotations of the three judges, who controversially gave Álvarez the first four rounds, the redhead opined that it made no sense that he had lost the decision, and said.
“I I think a lot of times the judges are impressed when I’m blocking punches, a lot of times I do rolling1396024897 and they let themselves be impressed by that and I think that’s what I failed a little there. “
Saúl Álvarez, wearing dark glasses and very calm, made a clarification about his comment above the ring that “this does not stay like this”.
“I am a very competitive person and this does not stay that way; I have many years ahead of me and I am going to come back very strong; believe me I’m going to come back very strong”.
That is, Saúl Álvarez plans to return to get his thorn out, although not necessarily with Bivol in the opposite corner.
Eddy Reynoso, coach of the biggest star in boxing today, also commented on the possible rematch with Bivol.
“Yes, we want a rematch, as Saúl also says: we feel that we did not lose the fight”, he said Reynoso, who stringed together convincing defeats in consecutive weeks as a coach after Óscar Valdez was defeated by Shakur Stevenson also in Las Vegas.
“We don’t like to look for excuses, we are Mexicans before anything else. We are a great team, Saúl is a winning fighter, as winners we are going to see if we get a rematch”, Reynoso considered.
