More than a thousand Haitians were stranded on Sunday (01.05.2022) in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo (northeast), from where they hope to be able to cross into the United States and be accepted by the immigration authorities of that country.

The government of the city, located in the state of Tamaulipas, provides temporary shelter to migrants who arrived with a humanitarian temporary visitor card and is applying the covid vaccine to them, reported Humberto Fernández Diez de Pinos, owner of Civil Protection.

“Taking advantage of the mega-vaccination campaign, we took on the task of visiting each of the temporary shelters to find out if they have their scheme complete vaccination, if not, the vaccine is applied, ”explained Fernández Diez de Pinos, also director of firefighters of Nuevo Laredo.

More than 3. Haitian migrants have arrived in this city, of which about 2.01 have crossed legally into the United States, since they all had an appointment with the North American immigration authorities.

Since the middle of last year, tens of thousands of Haitians, many of them from Chile and Brazil, have crossed the continent until reaching Mexico to try to enter the United States from there to request asylum.

Many of those who do not achieve this goal choose to request it in Mexico, where the number of requests from Haitians more than tripled in 2021 compared to 1200, according to official figures.
