Fashion icon Donatella Versace turns 67: a life in photos

Donatella Versace, is the youngest of the Versace brothers, she had a particularly strong bond with his brother Gianni, the founder of the historic brand and was his natural successor after his death in 1997.

She immersed herself in the world of fashion during the decade of 1980. Gianni launched a perfume brand called ‘Blonde’ that was dedicated to her. He then gave her his own perfume label. diffusion, ‘Versus’, which is still a well-known diffusion line of ‘Versace

Donatella debuted her first collection for Atelier Spring/Summer 1997 in a transparent runway over the pool at the Ritz Hotel in Paris that resulted in instant acclaim from industry insiders.

In 2013, Versace announced that Anthony Vaccarello would be the latest designer to produce a capsule collection for the label. The success of this led to Vaccarello being hired as permanent creative director for Versus Versace and the line more than doubled its year-over-year income in 2014; left in 2016.

Donatella, an active philanthropist, is a patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and in 2010 received VH1’s “Do Something” award for his contributions to charitable work.

In December 2017, was awarded the “Icon of Fashion” award during the Fashion Awards, while in 2016 won the International award at the CFDA. In the same year she was awarded “Designer of the Year” by both British GQ and GQ China, and awarded the “Fashion Icon Award” at the GQ Awards in Berlin.

She also received the CNMI Award in recognition of sustainability at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in 2017.

In 2018, the Versace company was acquired by Michael Kors Holdings, now renamed Capri Holdings, for a value of 2100 millions of dollars. Donatella and her family now own 176 millions of euros (176 million dollars) in group shares.

As artistic director and Vice President of the Board, she is responsible for the overall vision of the house, from its catwalk and image collections, to its global growth and future in the digital world.
