The San Diego District Attorney’s Office charged Yahao Du, with 25 years old, for a shooting where a California Highway Patrol officer was injured earlier this week.

The graduate student at the University of California, San Diego is charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, taking a firearm from a peace officer, and causing grievous bodily harm.

Du also worked with the Fogler Laboratory for Theoretical Physics. Akhil Premkumar, one of his work colleagues, said that “he always seemed cheerful and optimistic to me. I am absolutely shocked by what happened. I can’t imagine what could have made him act this way.”

The official identified as Tony Pacheco, was shot in the leg on Wednesday on a San Diego freeway after that the man allegedly lunged at him and tried to grab the gun from the officer. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, where he is in stable condition, according to Taylor Cooper , Capital of CHP.

In judicial documents of the year 2019, Du pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of “disturbing the peace,” for which he received a three-year probationary sentence, Fox 5 reported.

The shooter was scheduled to be tried on Friday afternoon, but because he was in improved observation housing, the court moved his hearing to Tuesday May 3.
