Historic night: New York Mets throw second no-hit, no-run game in their history

The New York Mets launched this Friday the second game without a hit or runs in the history of the New York franchise in the Major Leagues. The Metropolitans did it against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 3-0 win at City Field in New York.

The no-hitter was combined among five pitchers: starter Tylor Megill, Drew Smith, Dominican Joely Rodríguez and Puerto Ricans Seth Lugo and Edwin Díaz were the authors who combined to keep the mighty Phillies lineup hitless through the nine innings of the game.

This is the first no-hit, no-run game in the Mets organization since Venezuelan left-hander Johan Santana did it against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 1, 2012.

Megill, who got the win, pitched five innings, struck out five batters and gave three walks and continues his undefeated record of four wins and zero losses at the start of the season.

Smith replaced Megill and completed 1.1 innings of pure fire in which he retired the four outs that he completed by way of strikeout. Rodríguez then took the ball and, although he gave away two walks, he managed to get out without hits in a work inning.

Puerto Rican Lugo pitched two thirds without major complications to make way for his compatriot Díaz, who struck out all three batters in the ninth inning to earn the save.

In total, the Mets’ pitching struck out 12 batters and gave up six walks per balls to complete his historic performance.

The Mets’ three runs were driven by Jeff McNeil’s two-run single in the fifth inning and a solo home run by Pete Alonso in the sixth chapter.

Although other games were close to the feat, this is the first no-hitter of the season 2012, a season that is being marked by low offense and low number of homers per game.

The pu Francisco Lindor had two hits and Dominicans Robinson Canó and Starling Marte had one hit each for the Mets. Kyle Schwarber walked three times for the Phillies.
