HOUSTON – A judge set bail at $1 million for the man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend’s daughter this Friday in the Humble area.

Van Henry Bribson, aged 60, faces murder charges.

The victim, identified as Lauren Juma, aged 16, was a student from Nimitz High School and had just earned a spot on the school’s cheerleading team, according to family members.

New details of the tragedy emerged this Saturday after the victim’s sister share the last conversation he had with her Lauren shortly before she was killed.

“It was 1 am when called me and asked me to come get her because he (Bribson) was behaving very strange,” said Keryca Harmon, Lauren’s sister.

The victim’s mother told investigators that she and her daughter had a FaceTime conversation and that Lauren was telling her that Bribson was in his room sitting in the corner and wanted the mother I told him to get out of her room.

The mother, in the call, told Bribson to leave the room and it was at that moment that the man got up and Lauren realized that she was carrying a gun. At that point she dropped the call, according to court documents.

Lauren’s mother was in Austin when the tragedy occurred and the victim’s sister was unable to arrive on time.

“When I arrived, the police were already around the house and I heard the shots,” said the sister in an interview with ABC 13.

When the officers arrived at the scene and approached the entrance, they heard screams and a shot, a few seconds later they heard a second discharge from a firearm.

After the shooting, a man left the house and -according to the Police- told them: “Do what you have to do”.

The officers arrested him and upon entering the house they found the minor shot and lifeless.
