Brake discs are devices used to guarantee the speed reduction of each of the wheels of our car, until it stops. This is due to the friction they are capable of creating when the brakes catch the disc when the pedal is actuated.

Disc wear usually takes a long time since they are elements that have been made of metal, otherwise what happens with other parts of the brake system such as the pads, made with a friction component.

The deterioration of the discs Brake performance is determined by the use and care applied to the braking system assembly. Therefore, it will be necessary to check the condition of the discs at least every time the pads are changed and thus check if the wear warrants their replacement.

It is time to service the brakes.

When will we know if it is necessary to change the disks?

The best way to check how much wear the brake disc has suffered is to check the thickness it maintains. It will also be necessary to check if it has cracks, fissures, breaks or notable curvatures.

To know if the thickness of our disc is within the allowed limit, we must always have the manufacturer’s manual at hand. This limit appears on the disc’s description sheet and once it is exceeded, it must be changed immediately.

In the case of finding some of the defects that we describe here, it would not be enough just to change the disk. It will be essential to identify the possible failures that, apart from normal wear and tear, have caused this damage to the brake system.

In general, it is recommended to keep the discs that the car originally comes with.

Can the discs be replaced with second-hand parts?

Being an important element in the safety of the driver and passengers, the brake disc can in no way be used second-hand.

Replacing the brake discs will not be as cheap as changing the pads, but being such an essential element it is better not to skimp on bills.
