Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, visited the Azteca Stadium in preparation for the World Cup in 2026 which will be Mexico, the United States and Canada. The stadium in Mexico City will be remodeled in the coming months to be ready in four years.

Regarding what Mexico represents for world soccer, Infantino said: “Mexico is one of the most important countries in world football, it has an incredible history and passion. It is more than a religion, it is the life of millions of Mexicans”.

“Mexico has given a lot for soccer but it has also developed a lot with teams like América. Mexico’s passion is known all over the world and being here is fantastic”, said Infantino.

“The Azteca Stadium is the cathedral of world football, for me as an Italian it is like the Vatican of football, it is spectacular, you breathe legend when you think of those who have played on this course. The emotion that has been experienced in this stadium is unique”.

Yon de Luisa, president of the Mexican Football Federation, revealed some details of the remodeling of the Azteca Stadium for the World Cup 2026, affirming that they will fight to have the opening match.

“The change in the Azteca will be extraordinary. He is going to be an example for the whole world, but his identity, his legacy, is going to be left to him. Unlike others that have been remodeled, its essence will be respected”, de Luisa pointed out.

The president of the FMF stressed that the visit of Infantino and his team endorses the closeness and the joint work that has been done in the process towards the World Cup of 2026.

“Gianni, and everyone, thank you for supporting Mexico always in the world of soccer, for opening a space, lately, in the FIFA executive committee and in all the projects that Mexico has”, concluded Yon de Luisa.
