Over 120,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled for Possible E.Coli Contamination

Julio Guzmán

Total, 120,872 pounds of ground beef were recalled, after routine testing by the Inspection Service Sanitary and Food Safety (FSIS, for its acronym in English), of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed the presence of the bacteria E. Coli 0103 in various packages.

According to the report, the company Lakeside Refrigerated, of Swedesboro, New Jersey, has recalled packages of loose ground beef and ground beef patties that it made for various brands. On the list are Thomas Farms, Nature’s Reserve, Marketside Butcher, Tajima, SEG and Weis. These are stocked at stores like Whole Foods, Walmart, Winn-Dixie, and similar stores.

The withdrawn products have the establishment number “EST. 46841” within the USDA production and inspection mark, effective February 1, 2022 until April 8, 2022. (To see the complete list, click here)

Because most of the recalled product is past its expiration date, there is concern that customers still have these packages inside their freezers.

Most people infected with E. Coli 0103 develop diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. In other cases, the illnesses can last longer and be more serious. In very rare cases, the bacteria can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure, says the USDA.

“There have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” the department said.

If you have ground beef that complies with the description mentioned on the label it is recommended to throw it away or return it to the store for a refund of money. You can contact Lakeside at 800-493-9042 or at customercare@lakesiderefrigerated.com.

According to Forbes, all the meat withdrawn would be enough to prepare 295,000 Quarter Pounders or 960,000 small tacos.
