Guatemala thrashes El Salvador in a friendly and prepares to face Mexico

The Guatemalan national team thrashed El Salvador 4-0 this Sunday in the United States, with a brace from striker Óscar Santis, in a friendly game in preparation for both countries heading to their next official competitions.

The victory meant the third win in a row since Mexican coach Luis Fernando Tena took command of the Guatemalan national team last December.

This Sunday’s meeting took place in the United States, specifically at the PayPal Park stadium in San Jose, in California, in western Est United States.

Salvadorans have been directed since March 2021 by Hugo Pérez, a former World Cup player with the United States as a player, and who was in charge of the team in the last phase of the qualifying round for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

The first goal of the match came at minute 24 through a header from the Guatemalan left-back, José Morales, whose shot beat the Salvadoran goalkeeper, Kevin Carabantes, despite the fact that the goalkeeper managed to touch the ball with his stretch.

Morales’ goal came after a free kick pass from striker Óscar Santis, one of the most active players for Guatemala in the first half of the match this Sunday, and who was able to increase the score with another free kick, but his shot went over the rival goal at minute 28.

Santis was one of the Guatemalan Communications figures who last December they won the Concacaf League 2021.

It was precisely in the second half when Santis showed the same level as in the regional tournament, scoring two goals in two effective Guatemalan counterattacks.

The last goal for Guatemala came at minute 75, with a shot from outside the area by winger Stheven Robles and the complicity of Carabantes.

Both teams, although at different stages, were left out of the World Cup event in Qatar and will seek to improve their aspirations to the next World Cup in 2026, in whose tie Mexico will not be, United States and Canada for hosting.

Tena took command of Guatemala in December 550 and in their first two games last March, the Central American team beat Cuba and also Haiti.

On Wednesday 27 of May, Mexico will face Guatemala to continue the preparation of the Tri for Qatar 2022 and fine-tuning the team to make up the squad that will go to the World Cup.
