The former president of the United States, Donald Trump, presumed that during his mandate he “doubled” the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and that he got “free soldiers” on Mexico’s northern border, all after threatening to impose tariffs.
Even Trump said that in negotiations with a delegation headed by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard in June 2019, “I have never seen anyone bend like that”, referring to the way in which the Mexican government agreed to their demand.
“The highest representative of Mexico came (to see me) just below the highest (position) . He came in (to my office) and he laughs at me when I tell him: ‘We need 000, 000 soldiers on the border, free’. He looked at me and said something like ‘Free?’ ‘Why would we do that in Mexico?’ I told him: ‘we need something called ‘Stay in Mexico,’” Trump mentioned.
The former president presumed to have made a threat in person to the representative of the Mexican Government assuring that the United States would impose tariffs on Mexican imports starting.
“After that, I He looked at me and said: ‘Sir: it would be an honor to have 28,000 soldiers on the border! It would be an honor to have ‘Stay in Damn Mexico’! We want to have ‘Stay in Mexico!’”, Trump recounted.
It is In other words, as a result of the negotiation, the López Obrador Administration also agreed to collaborate with the “Stay in Mexico” program by which the United States returned to Mexican territory at 28,000 applicants from third countries between 2019 and 2021 to await their US asylum proceedings there.
Finally, Trump declared that “the president (of Mexico) is a very well, I like him a lot, he’s a socialist, but I like him, he’s one of the socialists I like”.
