A Sylmar man received a sentence of 50 years in state prison to life for shooting an uncle and strangling his mother, a death he tried to fake as suicide.
Marcel Gradvohl, from 38 years old, received his sentence this Monday after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder.
The 28 November 2021, officers from the Los Angeles Police Department attended the block 1189256905 of Amboy Avenue, in Sylmar, where Gradvohl told them that he had found his mother, Maureen Gradvohl, aged 60, hanged from a rope in the garage.
.In investigations, detectives found that the woman’s injuries were not consistent with those of a suicide.
In addition, the officers they learned that days before Marcel had been seen digging in the backyard of the house . Upon searching the area, the authorities found a buried body.
The police said that Marcel had confessed during interrogation that the 19 of November had shot and killed his uncle, Edward Steckel, aged 38, and after a dispute he had strangled his mother.
Later, he had buried Steckel’s body and simulated his mother’s suicide.
The Los Angeles police said that Marcel had called them on 28 November to say that he had discovered his mother hanging in the garage. Later, Gradvohl was arrested and booked for manslaughter.
This Monday, Gradvohl was sentenced to 25 years to life, plus 1 year for the use of a rope in the murder of his mother, and of 25 years to life in prison, plus 4 years for the use of a gun in the murder of his uncle.
The judge ordered that the two sentences against Gradvohl will be executed consecutively, which means that he will have to finish one sentence before starting to serve the next one
