Hugo Sánchez was one of the greatest soccer players in the Mexico history. The “Pentapichichi” left a mark on a Real Madrid full of stars. The Mexican’s performance led him to be one of the club’s leaders, but his relationship with Óscar Ruggeri started off on the wrong foot , since the Argentine became one of his new companions in the “White House”.

The “Cabezón” arrived at Real Madrid after a brilliant internship with teams such as Boca Juniors, River Plate and CD Logroñés . His arrival at the merengue team generated great expectations, a royal defender for a team full of figures. The reception was the first big hurdle. The Argentine player overcame him without much problem, but Hugo Sánchez was the one with whom he had his first brush in his first entrance to the locker room.

“They came from being champions of Spain four years in a row and this is the day they are going to present me. I open the door and everyone was sitting there: Butragueño, Hugo Sánchez, Schuster, Míchel, Sanchís, Gordillo and Hierro. When I go in I look for a place to sit down and I pass by Hugo and he tells me: ‘One more sudaca ‘, and I replied: ‘Where are you from? You’re a Mexican, you can’t bother me’, that’s how Hugo received me at Real Madrid, but later we had a great relationship”, the Argentine explained in an interview.

Rotten stars in the Real Madrid

That merengue squad got tired of winning and reaping trophies season after season. The successes calm the inconvenience, but within Real Madrid there was a very tense atmosphere that tainted the great results achieved within the engramado . Thanks to an initiative of the “Cabezón”, the club players were able to hold a dinner to smooth things over.

“ The group got along badly. We scored five or six goals for everyone, but in the group no one spoke to each other , everyone was fighting; on the court everything was fine, but in the locker room they bathed and each one went home, I said: ‘What a shitty group!’ One day I confronted the captain and told him: ‘No one talks here, you have to hold a meeting and say things to your face'”, said the former soccer player.
