Sebastián and Emiliano Zurita: “We seek to make fun of the difficult things in life”

Sebastián and Emiliano Zurita have just released the second season of the series ‘How to Survive Single’ on Amazon Prime, starring the oldest of them, after the successful first part that accompanied us to distract us during the pandemic.

We spoke exclusively with the children of Christian Bach and Huberto Zurita, who, in addition to revealing to us that they already have recorded the third season, they explain one of the important objectives of this comedy: “We seek to make fun of the difficult things in life.”

-It was expected and happened, second season for ‘How to Survive Single’…

Emiliano Zurita: I think it was very impressive for us to see that people really liked the first season a lot , who wanted to see more of those characters, more of their stories, and this second season we do just that, we are now fully going to each different universe of the characters it is. In truth, to see this ensemble that we created with these impressive actors, and more than nothing we learned a lot what worked very well from the first one, what not so much, and we improve everything for the second one and it comes much more fun, more emotional, bigger than the first one, so if you saw the first one, you’re going to love the second one.

-They talk about what what they discovered to improve and what they exploited even more because they liked it a lot, what did they discover from the first one?

Sebastián Zurita: A lot of things, I think that something that people liked a lot and that we discovered that we had to do more, was to continue playing songs that could become medium taboos, but they were also very fresh to listen to, and with this ironic and dark comedy tone that we have… We saw what stories they liked, what they didn’t, how much drama we needed to put into it, how much comedy, and I think that we found a good balance in this season 2. People like it It was a lot when the group was together, so they really enjoy the scenes when all the characters are together, we tried to create more of that, but also, at the same time, we tried to give more depth to each story, each character, so that they can live in themselves, and not belong only to someone else’s story. The new cast gives it much more life, much more color, we made a great effort in matters of diversity, and to be able to try to bring other types of stories to the screen, other types of ages.

-Comedy is extremely difficult to do And you add inclusion, how do you achieve it without hurting feelings?

Emiliano Zurita: Doing it in a very honest way, because for us it was always the main thing to tell a story of a group of friends in their thirties, trying to survive either heartbreak, relationships, work, whatever… As my brother says, that is to touch on topics that in some way may seem difficult to talk about and difficult to put in a comedy as you say, but that is something that we Mexicans are very good at making fun of the difficult things in life, and enjoying life in all its facets. Instead of pretending that those things that are difficult to talk about or that hurt at some point, that they don’t exist, well put them on screen, talk about them, make fun of them, have real conversations, and I think that’s what made the people in the first season were very identified with the way we expressed ourselves, with the topics we touched on and very cool because in truth we want to create a real dramatic comedy, that the same, the same details and the same experiences and situations that lead you to comedy, also lead you to drama, and that feels very natural, very fresh.

– How do you see it you, the Zurita brothers, in the crystal age, where sometimes the mockery is as taken as you disrespected me, to be able to play with this without anyone feeling very hurt?

Sebastián Zurita: Nobody knows feel hurt, I see it impossible, you will always hurt susceptibilities, but I think that what we try to face in a very honest way, we do not want to give lessons, we try to put several points of view, obviously it is not enough for us to put all of them, but what we do is that we make fun of everyone equally , and I think that the characters can present a point of view and make fun of their point of view, and then the other comes along and makes fun of the other’s point of view… In characters like Billy Boys, who is the most sexist and macho that exists on the planet, but we make fun of him, we make fun of the macho and the sexist. That is part of the magic of comedy and, obviously, because in that conflict that you can create or that sudden tension with the viewer is also beneficial because what you do is speak, open a dialogue, and that is what we want, we are here to open dialogue.

–In one part it says: “The better people leave me from one day to the next” What does this phrase mean to you?

Emiliano Zurita: I think that for the character of Sebastián it is very important to understand that phrase because he, from the first season, was a very romantic man, but to the point that he felt that life has to be like a fairy tale… Sometimes you feel that people he forgets you from one day to the next no, if you have been in a relationship for many years and they break up, and that person becomes a stranger again in a certain way, it seems that they left you. The important thing is that we are learning in these series, is that being single does not mean being alone, you have your friends, your family, you have yourself to continue learning, continue enjoying the good and bad things of life.

What is very strong about this series is that we can see it from that comical side but also something very real, that if you lose someone very close to you, it also affects you, and I think it’s very nice to see how it affects Sebastián from the dramatic side and from the comic side, and I think that’s what generates a funny story, that people want to see it and apart from that it touches your heart.
