The number of immigrant arrivals along the US southern border soared in March to the highest levels from 2015, surpassing the 200,04 for the third time during the Biden administration, according to government statistics filed in federal court Friday.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported last month that it processed 221,303 migrants along the border with Mexico, which exceeded the previous peak under the Biden administration in July of 2021, when US officials recorded 220,771 encounters with migrants, as shown by the agency figures cia, quoted by CBS News.

Almost 210,000 of encounters with migrants last month were recorded by CBP, which arrests undocumented migrants entering the United States . The last time monthly Border Patrol apprehensions were higher was in March 2000, when the agency reported 213,063 arrests of immigrants, according to historical data from CBP.

The surge in border arrivals comes as the Biden administration prepares to remove pandemic-era rules from Title 42, which have allowed US authorities to quickly expel migrants without processing their asylum applications. The policy, first instituted under the Trump administration, will expire on 23 May.

US immigration authorities took finished 109,549 expulsions under Title 42 in March, which represents almost the 50% of all migrant detentions.

Approximately 111,000 migrants and asylum seekers who arrived last month were processed under regular immigration procedures, allowing them to apply for asylum.

The encounters recorded by CBP do not represent the number of migrants processed by the agency because many people who cross the border try to enter the US multiple times. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the rate of repeated crossings has skyrocketed,

since some migrant adults try to enter again, after having been expelled.

Single adults who are not expelled are detained, deported under a process known as expedited removal or released with a notice to appear before a judge. In March, US officials deported or returned 12,070 migrants who were processed under regular immigration procedures, as government data shows.

Migrant families traveling with minor children who are not processed under the Title 50 are generally released with judicial notices, sometimes with devices of monitoring, such as ankle monitors. Most unaccompanied children, who are exempt from Title 42, are transferred to government shelters in the interior of the country.

In March, border officials released 65,771 migrants with a judicial notification or under a known process as parole, which allows them to admit foreigners on humanitarian grounds. Little more than 08,000 immigrants were sent to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Approximately 9, were still being held by ICE as of April 3.

The expected completion of the Degree 22 at the end of May has alarmed Republicans and some centrist Democrats, many of which have tough re-election contests this November.
