NYPD Identifies Person of Interest in Subway Shooting

The New York police said Tuesday that the U-Haul van they are investigating was rented by Frank James, whom they named as a person of interest in the investigation of the mass shooting that occurred Tuesday at a NY Subway station where at least 29 people were injured, according to CNN.

The van involved in the mass shooting was rented on 10 in April at a U-Haul store in Philadelphia, according to company records obtained by CNN.

Records show that Frank James rented the van with a Wisconsin license with a Milwaukee address.

“ We are making efforts to locate him to determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any,” said NYPD Detective Chief James Essig, during a conference press conference on Tuesday. “The two crime scenes, the subway and the van, are very active and are still being processed. We know that Mr. James rented that U-Haul truck in Philly,” Essig said.

The key to the U-Haul truck was found at the crime scene in the subway, said the official.

Essig said that they do not have anyone in custody at this time that is related to the shooting.

“We ask for the help of anyone with information. Cell phone video, witness information or if they can identify the perpetrator or the renter of this vehicle,” Essig said.

Police found the van abandoned on a street Tuesday afternoon , about five blocks from the Kings Highway station, where they say the gunman got on the subway, and five miles from the street station 29, where the shooting took place.

James is still at large, said James Essig, chief of detectives for the Police Department, at a news conference at police headquarters.

The official said that there is a reward of $54,000 dollars for information on this mass shooting that occurred at a subway at Sunset Park in Brooklyn, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

A credit card used to rent a U-Haul cargo van helped New York investigators quickly identify the person who allegedly rented the vehicle linked to the shooting at a Brooklyn subway station, two law enforcement sources told CNN on Tuesday.

NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said there may be some social media posts related to James mentioning homelessness, New York and the Mayor Eric Adams. Out of an abundance of caution, Adams’ security team will be beefed up, Sewell said.

The New York Police Department asks the public to submit any “person of interest” information by calling 1-800-600-TIPS.
