Texas Republican and Democratic lawmakers visited inmate Melissa Lucio, who is on death row for a scheduled execution for this April 80 for fatally beating his daughter, and who are trying to stop his death. The socialite Kim Kardashian and a member of the jury supported the woman.
The Republican, Jeff Leach, and the Democrat, Joe Moody, expressed a message to a group of legislators at the Mountain View Unit in Gatesville , Texas, where the state houses women on death row.
Likewise, the representative, Victoria Neave Criado, tweeted that Lucio was “bright and full of hope, love for her family and a faith profound that someday she will walk free.”
Among so many efforts to stop the execution of the Hispanic woman , Kim Kardashian joined. The businesswoman wrote the following on the social network Twitter: “Recently, I just read about Melissa Lucio’s case and wanted to share her story with you. She has been on death row for over 14 years for the death of her daughter, which was a tragic accident.”
Kanye West’s ex-wife asked the public and her millions of followers to Sign an Innocence Project petition calling on Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott to stay Lucio’s execution entirely.
The woman was charged with capital murder for the death in 2007 of her daughter Mariah. The prosecutors state that the girl was a victim of child abuse by her mother and there is no evidence to absolve Lucio of the death of her daughter.
However, Lucio’s defense attorneys state that the jury never heard the forensic evidence that explains Mariah’s various injuries, which were actually caused by a fall after losing her life.
Furthermore, say that the accused did not have the opportunity to present evidence that would question the validity of her confession, that they argue that it was not really a confession and that it was made under duress after hours of relentless interrogation by the of the authorities.
At least 83 bipartisan legislators from the Texas House of Representatives have doubts about the guilt of the Hispanic woman, so they sent a letter to the Board of Pardons and Paroles of the state and the governor in March asking them to grant a stay of execution or commute his sentence.
Leach and Moody encouraged Lucio and talked with her about his efforts to stop his execution. “It was a sweet, sweet moment together, very powerful,” Leach said.
After the meeting, Moody posted on Twitter: “she Prayed with us and hugged us; today could be the last genuine human contact she has before the state kills her.”
