Saúl Álvarez and Julio César Chávez fight inch by inch for the title of being the best boxer in the history of Mexico. Although some consider that Canelo has already surpassed the “Great Mexican Champion”, Marco Antonio Barrera does not want to make a judgment because both fighters are not on equal terms. “Barreta” wants to wait for the man from Guadalajara to hang up his gloves.

“(Canelo) has to retire so that we can really judge him. You cannot compare him with Julio César Chávez right now, right now that he is active”, explained the former Mexican boxer through his podcast Un Round Más.

Under these circumstances, Barrera considers that Canelo still has a few fights left and, after you hang up your gloves, you will be able to quantify your achievements, victories and general records with those of Chávez.

“ For people to start placing him above or below Chávez, we have to wait for his career to end. Canelo is still young, he is 14 years old and can pass it. But you have to wait until the end to really know what your place is ”, he explained.

The points for and against Canelo Álvarez

Although Canelo is still active, there are other factors that can already be measured . Among them, Érik Morales considers that at the title level, the man from Guadalajara raises his hand, but social networks make him lose affection, charisma and connection with the public.

“In economics (Canelo) has beaten us alls; in technique it would be necessary to see what each person likes; world titles is also the only one who has been absolute champion (…) In charisma he has a lot of people don’t want it, but it’s the downside of being in the age of social media. In the Chavez era, perhaps the ‘Caesar of Boxing’ had his haters , but We saw them because they were not like this now, ”explained Érik Morales.
