A woman walking through Wicker Park was severely injured when a sign and part of a concrete facade of a commercial building fell on her.
Police are investigating a collapsed structure on the block 1200 of North Milwaukee Avenue, at the intersection of North Ashland Avenue, since it only had scaffolding, but no notice of construction or remodeling.
The report from the authorities describes that a young woman of 22 years old was walking on the sidewalk when all the rubble fell and a sign hit her head hard, which caused him to lose consciousness.
The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital to be treated by medical personnel, who only commented that his state of health is very critical due to the serious injuries that he has on his body.
A car that was traveling along the same street and was also hit by the debris from the building, explained the ABC7 news program.
Some witnesses who live near the affected building reported to the authorities who for a few days had seen that the structure was beginning to crumble despite the fact that the scaffolding was there, the pieces of cement could be seen in the floor.
“About four or five days ago, the facade of the building started to erode from the north side. I realized that the sign, which was basically only screwed to the facade, so since it was eroding, it was a matter of time before it collapsed, “shared Mike Serafin, a neighbor of the place.
According to the police report, it revealed that a notice was sent to the owner of the building, but they never received an answer, so the city had to remove the rubble from the street, they also removed some parts of the facade before it collapsed from new account.
Likewise, it was reported that the owner did not has been presented, then they will have to make repairs to the facade and so far they have not had to force the door to enter the property. These circumstances will be added to other execution actions against the owner, the authorities described.
