The Argentina national team shirt, with which Diego Armando Maradona faced England in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Mexico 1986 and scored the winning goals, will be auctioned by Sotheby’s for a value close to £6,000,000 of pounds sterling (about $7,843,04 dollars).
The jersey that the deceased soccer player wore in that game played at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City, on 22 June 1986, in which they beat the Europeans 2-1, has been remembered and coveted by several fans around the world for the peculiar annotations that Maradona made against the English.
The first goal, called “the hand of God” emerged after winning a shot from the goalkeeper with his hand raised, and the second known as “the goal of the century” , after a work of art, in which the Argentine star outwitted half of the players in a sprint that started from midfield to the goalkeeper’s area and also beat him. That annotation is considered the best in history.
Steve Hodge, former English midfielder, who was present at the meeting, was the lucky one to obtain the jersey of the Argentine striker. At that time he was 22 years old. At the end of that game, he went to the locker room and asked Maradona for his shirt and he gave it to him.
For several years the shirt it was the main decorative piece of the Hodge house, in Nottingham, until in 2003 he lent it to the Museum National Football in Manchester. Although on several occasions the former soccer player denied that he would put it up for sale, now the piece is inside the offices of Sotheby’s in London.
“ The shirt is in good condition, considering heavy use, perspiration and player activity. Has slight fraying at the front hem and minor stains throughout,” reads the description of the jersey on the auction house’s website.
Dalma Maradona, the daughter of the deceased striker, has sparked controversy by assuring that the shirt that will be put up for auction is not the one her father used to put the two annotations . She says that her father used to wear two jerseys for each half of the match and the one he gave Hodge is for the first half, not the one he was wearing when he scored the two goals.
