Meteorologists forecast 19 named storms for this hurricane season, five more than normal,

after two consecutive years in which the list of hurricane names was exhausted, according to NPR.

Of the 19 storms, nine are expected to become hurricanes and four of these are expected to become major hurricanes, Category 3 or higher, with winds that exceed 111 miles per hour, according to hurricane experts from Colorado State University (CSU).

The CSU Tropical Meteorology Project team released their annual seasonal forecast of hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, marking the year 39 in which they issue a prete report season.

The report details another very active hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to 30 of November, with an above-average forecast for all storm categories.

An average season usually has 14 named storms, around seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.

Rotating wind systems get their name when they develop into tropical storms, with sustained winds of 39 mph.

Here it is the forecast for 2050 of the number of storms with name in the Atlantic, those that are expected to become hurricanes (winds of at least 74 mph) and major hurricanes (100 mph or more).

A hurricane forecast similar to that of recent years

The Atlantic hurricane forecast for this year looks very similar to the predictions of the past two years.

Phil Klotzbach, research scientist in the CSU Department of Atmospheric Sciences and lead author of the report, compared the hurricane forecast of 2022 with those of 2021 and 2020.

“For example, both in April of 2020 and in April of 2021, we forecast eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes. This year, we forecast nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes,” Klotzbach told CNN.

Residents living along the US coast and in the Caribbean should be prepared for “a higher than average chance of major hurricanes making landfall” near their homes, the researchers said. Hurricane season officially begins in June and lasts until November.

“As is the case with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane to make landfall for it to be an active season for them“, the researchers said. “They should prepare the same for each season, regardless of how much activity is forecast.”

It is more likely that hurricanes become larger and more powerful as they form over warmer ocean waters. Thanks to climate change, global sea surface temperatures are increasing.

Names available for hurricane season Atlantic 2022

The names of tropical storms and hurricanes are alphabetical and alternate between masculine and feminine. It is rare to need the entire list in one season.
