Construction worker died in Boston after collapsing nine stories of a parking garage under demolition

A construction worker died this Saturday in Boston after suffering a fall while inside a crane in a parking lot that partially collapsed and that it was under demolition , informed the authorities.

The rescuers arrived around 5: 40 in the afternoon, Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey told a news conference.

Rescuers they showed up in the parking lot in the area of ​​the Government Center in Boston, and were able to verify that the worker is at the end of the debris from the collapse, said the commissioner.

It is believed that the man who died was on the crane when he fell nine stories, Kelley McCormick, captain of the Boston police, said at a press conference, and also indicated that there was “a tremendous amount of debris”.

“It is a building that is being demolished, so those buildings are always dangerous ”, said Dempsey.

The body of the worker will not be recovered until the engineers finish with the inspection of the area and determine that it is structurally safe to carry out this work, the authorities reported.

“No we’re not going to put anyone there until it’s safe to do so,” said the fire commissioner.

A pedestrian who witnessed the building collapse requested that he be taken to a hospital, a Boston City EMS official said. His health condition was not disclosed at this time, CNN reported.

For her part, the mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, promised to investigate the landslide “This is a horrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the worker here tonight” , she said. “The city will work to do whatever it takes to understand what happened here.”

Furthermore, the Suffolk district attorney, Kevin Hayden, stated from his office that he would be involved in the investigation of the incident hand in hand with local, state and federal authorities.

“Our office is a stone’s throw from the garage and our staff have seen through the windows of your office all the work that has been done during these months”, Hayden said in a statement. “Knowing that one of the workers on this project has tragically died weighs heavily on our hearts. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

The construction site is part of a development project called Bullfinch Crossing, which will add some new mid-rise and high-rise buildings in downtown Boston, says the project’s website, the Boston Globe reported.
