President Joe Biden said that Vladimir Putin should “leave power”, but soon the The White House had to clarify that it was referring to the fact that the Russian president should not impose “his power” on other countries, such as Ukraine.
“For God’s sake, this man cannot stay in power,” Biden said in reference to Putin in Poland.
The White House had to clarify President Biden’s intention.
“The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to wield power over his neighbors or the region“, affirmed an adviser. “He was not talking about Putin’s power in Russia, or a regime change.”
The clarifications continue, as it has Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said this Sunday during a visit to Israel that the US. “does not have a regime change strategy in Russia”, after statements by President Biden.
“I think the president pointed out last night that Putin simply cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against Ukraine or anyone else,” Blinken said today during a press conference in Jerusalem with his Israeli counterpart, Yair Lapid.
“As you know, and as you have repeatedly heard us say, we do not have a strategy of regime change in Russia, nor in any other place”, mentioned the Secretary of State, who added that “in this case, as in any case, it depends on the people of the country in question, it depends on the Russian people” .
During their meetings today, the head of US diplomacy highlighted Israeli mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine and appreciated the help humanitarian aid provided by the Jewish state, especially through the establishment ment of a field hospital to treat the wounded on Ukrainian territory.
Among the criticisms of the Biden Administration are those of Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR, in English) and author of the book “The World, a Brief Introduction”, who considered that the comments of the President Biden made “a difficult situation more difficult” and “a dangerous situation more dangerous”, although he had supported the US president’s actions on the invasion from Ukraine.
“I have supported how @POTUS has handled the conflict. Our interest is in ending the war on terms that Ukraine can accept and discourage Russia from escalating,” he said on Twitter. “The call of today for a change of regime is inconsistent with these terms, which explains my criticism and the clarification of the White House”.
Blinken also thanked the Israeli authorities for their public rejection of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the commitment that Israel will not allow Russia to use it to evade the sanctions imposed after the offensive.
