12-year-old boy dies after terrorist attack on police facility in Colombia

A child of 14 years who had been injured on Saturday in a terrorist attack with explosives against an Immediate Attention Command (CAI) of the Police in the south of Bogotá died in the hospital, authorities reported this Sunday.

“We regret the death of a little boy from 12 years”, the Personería de Bogotá wrote on its Twitter account, while the Al Caldía identified him as Daniel Stiven Duque and reported that the number of injured was 35, including a five-year-old girl years that he is in critical condition due to head injuries.

The attack on Saturday night against the CAI in the Arborizadora Alta neighborhood, which suffered structural damage, also affected 66 dwellings and four col egios, especially because of the glass that was broken by the explosion.

So far it is unknown who the perpetrators of the attack are and the authorities offered a reward of about $66,000 dollars for information on those responsible.

Condemnation of the mayor

The mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, today condemned the attack, lamented the death of the minor and specified that they were 35 the wounded, including two policemen.

“We cry with the family of Daniel Stiven, we are going to accompany them in their mourning, in their pain, but we are also going to accompany them so that there is justice ”, said López.

The president also said that a five-year-old girl who was injured in the attack “is in serious condition ( …) her head is affected, she is very critical, very critical”.

“We are not going to allow any violent person to take away our soul, our peace of mind. We reject all forms of violence, we condemn them”, he added.

López explained that the authorities continue to work to find “the perpetrators of the acts criminals” and emphasized that the terrorist action was perpetrated knowing the damage they could do.

“ The first investigations of the Police indicate that whoever put that device and detonated it, did it knowing the whole environment,

seeing that there was a community, that there were families, that there were children. This is a criminal act that we condemn and that we reject”, he said.

Reinforcement of the security

The mayor added that 160 Police will reinforce the CAI of Ciudad Bolívar to protect “the tranquility of the inhabitants of the locality”.

Colombian President Iván Duque and Defense Minister Diego Molano were at the scene of the attack on Saturday.

“We visited the Arborizadora Alta CAI in Bogotá, after today’s cowardly attack with explosives, to coordinate the investigations and find those responsible. The whole of Colombia rejects terrorist acts against our security forces and the community”, the Head of State wrote last night on social media.

Minister Molano said that , according to the investigations, the attack was perpetrated with an explosive device that was in a suitcase abandoned in the vicinity of the police facility .

“It was activated after one of the uniformed officers entered the CAI to answer a call,” explained Molano.

On March 5, a similar explosion occurred near the police station in the Sierra Morena neighborhood, which is part of the town of Ciudad Bolívar, the fourth most populous city in Bogotá, with more than 80, inhabitants, but only caused material damage.
