Shooting on a Florida public transit bus leaves 2 dead and 2 injured

Two people were killed and two others were injured after a gunman opened fire on Thursday afternoon aboard a public transport bus in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, police said.

The shooting occurred on a Fort Lauderdale County public transportation bus Broward just before 4 p.m., according to WSVN.

Fort Lauderdale Acting Police Chief Luis Alvarez described the scene at a news conference on Thursday, according to Local07.com.

Luis Álvarez said that the shooter surrendered after the bus driver went to the Fort Lauderdale police station.

“We had an officer on an unrelated call in front of the police station. He heard several shots coming from inside the bus. The suspect got out and surrendered to the officer. Other officers boarded the bus where they found 4 people shot.”

Alvarez applauded the reactions of the Broward County transit bus driver, who said he should be praised as a hero.

“Driving and getting to the police station and having that presence of mind saved lives,” he said.

The bus was traveling west from the block 1100 of West Broward Boulevard and that is where police believe it happened the shooting

The bus pushed a car, injuring 3 other people who were treated at the scene, as it made its way to the police station.

“From what I have been told, and from our initial investigation, while the bus was driving it got stuck and could not cross Broward Boulevard. It was then that the driver forced the bus to pass a vehicle that was blocking her and made her way to the front of the police station,” said Luis Álvarez.

Police said the shooter and victims were on board the bus when the driver took it to the bus station. police.

The injured were transported to the Broward Health Medical Center as an emergency, the Fire Department indicated.

The Fort Lauderdale police confirmed on social media, meanwhile, that there were “four people who were transported to a hospital after the shooting that occurred on a bus”, from which the driver emerged unharmed.
