Russia warns: West risks its own security by arming Ukraine

Deutsche Welle

Western countries are “putting their own security at risk” by arming Ukraine, Russian ambassador Vasili Nebenzia warned the UN Security Council, who said that the supply of weapons means “adding fuel to the fire” and that “it will have tragic repercussions”.

“We see how weapons of all kinds continue to be supplied by Western capitals (…) The fact of putting weapons in the hands of civilians, do Westerners know the risk it represents for their own security, when surface-to-air missiles and grenade launchers fall into the hands of anyone?” warned the ambassador.

“Disinformation” from the West

Nebenzia specifically alluded to yesterday’s announcement by the president Joe Biden that the United States would supply drones, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-armor missiles and firearms with their ammunition worth $550,000,02 of dollars. It is not the only country to do so: others such as the United Kingdom, France, Holland, Germany, Canada, Spain and Sweden, among others, have also announced the shipment of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine

“Unfortunately, Ukraine is nothing but a pawn on the Western board”, said the ambassador, who dedicated his speech to denouncing what he called a disinformation campaign by the Western media, mainly regarding the city of Mariupol, that it has suffered the harshest attacks in this war and that it is “the object of a large number of lies”.

According to the Russian ambassador, all the information that has appeared in Western media about the bombing of civilian buildings such as the Mariupol Maternity Hospital or its theater hide the fact that members of the far-right Azov Battalion had supposedly barricaded themselves there. And it went further to accuse the Ukrainian forces of purposely hindering the evacuation of civilians in order to “use them as human shields”.

Prior to the long intervention of Nebenzia, the ambassadors of Western countries had accused Russia not only of deliberately attacking civilian targets , but of trying to use the Security Council forums to practice the “cynicism” of raising its own resolution proposed to “respect humanitarian principles” in the war that Russia calls a “special operation.

There will be no vote on a humanitarian resolution on Ukraine

Increasingly isolated, Russia has desisted from putting it to a vote a humanitarian resolution on Ukraine in the United Nations Security Council on Friday, lacking the support of its closest allies. This was announced to the AFP news agency by several diplomats who requested anonymity. “They resorted to co-sponsorship” for their text on the humanitarian aspect “and there has been no return,” said an ambassador, suggesting that neither China nor India support the controversial Russian initiative and would not have voted in favor.
