Mother abandoned her 5-year-old autistic son on the highway in a storm in Ohio

A woman is accused of child abuse and is detained, after putting her children at risk and abandoning one of her children who suffers from autism, when traveling from Ohio to Tennessee. The mother left him on a road where there were no sidewalks, until the county police rescued him.

Heather Adkins traveled by road to Tennessee to drop off two of the her three children. On the way back, the woman was accompanied by a man and his son under 5 years old, Martin Thomas Adkins, who suffers from non-verbal autism.

“I did not abandon him. That’s why they left him there, I’m going to go back there so he knows I never left him. It will take a long time for him to trust me again, and for me to trust myself too,” said the defendant.
