Mexican soccer players are spread throughout Central America. More and more Aztec players are leaving Mexico to continue their careers in other countries with lesser football traditions. Guatemala was one of the favorite destinations for Mexicans, but few have managed to stay in Guatemalan soccer.
Seven Mexicans have left Guatemalan soccer. This figure is divided between coaches and players. The landscape for the Aztecs has changed from heaven to earth. In the Apertura 2021 the elements formed in Liga MX were the sensation, but for the Clausura 2022, the context is different.
Soccer players leave Guatemala
The most notorious case of all was that of Carlos Pena. The Guatemalan Antigua CFG decided to rescind the Aztec’s contract by not considering him part of the institution’s project . Gullit’s salary was one of the main obstacles for him to try his luck at another club. In addition to Peña, soccer players like Javier Orozco, Marco Bueno and Daniel Guzmán left the National League.
Mexican trainers on the streets
At the start of the tournament, five strategists from Mexico were part of the Guatemalan National League. However, only Irving Rubirosa (Xelajú MC) and Roberto Hernández (Deportivo Malacateco). The other three coaches finished their cycle with the teams, but without reaching the end of the season, they were: Daniel Guzmán (Guastatoya), Raúl Arias (Deportivo Achuapa) and Roberto Montoya (Old GFC).
Mexican DNA remains in the selection
Despite all these changes, the National Football Federation of Guatemala keeps the future of the team in the hands of a Mexican: Luis Fernando Tena. In addition, three more strategists lead the lower categories of the Guatemalan team.
