Three Middletown High School students in Frederick, sent hateful messages through social media, which were aimed at African-American students . The posts included threats, insults and intimidation with firearms.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation regarding the threats and arrested the three minors . When the officers searched their belongings in the rooms of their houses, they discovered that the guns they showed in the photographs turned out to be fake.

The directors of the institution revealed that this class of students cannot belong to a school : “I’m sorry, but those kids can’t be in our schools,” said Jay Mason, a member of the Frederick County Board of Education, who felt affected by the threats for being African-American.

The three students were arrested and charged with violating Maryland’s hate crime statutes which prohibits harassment or assault against individuals or groups in based on their race, gender, faith or other personal identities.

The identity of the students was not revealed because they were minors. The Frederick County Sheriff, Charles A. Jenkins, communicated in a press conference: “We cannot tolerate, nor will we tolerate these types of threats or messages that disturb and generate fear in our communities”.

The parents of each of the students arrested cooperated with the officers for the investigation and allowed to discover that the firearms were BB guns. The photographic material they sent was taken earlier this year, although the hate messages were sent this week.

Superintendent Marko Macoe sent a letter to the parents to inform them that the behavior shown by the three students does not represent the community to which they aspire to be and asked them to talk to each of their children about the importance of the appropriate use of social networks.
