Pakistan is the country with the highest infant mortality rate in the world, giving birth and surviving childbirth is a challenge and if successful, a blessing, however, for Shahzeb Khan, being the father of a daughter was more than a joy, it was a tragedy, so he took his life.
The case shocked the entire Pakistani society, as it was a true criminal act, as if taken from a dark horror novel, as the man shot dead his seven-day-old baby, simply because he wanted his firstborn to be a boy.
The newborn baby named Jannat, which means “heaven” in Urdu, was shot five times, causing instant death, according to investigations.
The defendant had been married for two years and after his eldest daughter arrived, he was seen complaining three or four days that I wanted to have a child and was very angry, told Zarrar Khan, a spokesman for the Mianwali police, according to the Tribune newspaper.
The baby’s maternal grandfather, Nasrullah Khan , was the one who told the police that his son-in-law had killed his daughter because he could not accept that his wife gave birth to a girl and not a boy.
The man, who had fled, was arrested during the early hours of Thursday after an intense search, according to the police.
In Pakistan, a very conservative and patriarchal country, where girls and women face widespread violence, constantly having a child is seen as a good omen, as it is believed that he can better secure his parents’ financial future than a girl.
