Ralf Schumacher on the dismissal of Russian Nikita Mazepin from Formula 1: “I'm sorry for Mazepin, but Haas did the right thing”

Ralf Schumacher, brother of Michael Schumacher and uncle of Mick Schumacher, spoke about the dismissal of Nikita Mazepin, a Russian Formula 1 driver, which the Haas team terminated his contract due to the war in Ukraine.

Mazepin, Mick Schumacher’s teammate, had had several conflicts with the German driver during previous seasons. Mick Schumacher’s uncle spoke about the dismissal of Mazepin and his departure from the season 2022.

“It’s a shame for Nikita, he I feel for him because he can’t do anything about it and it has absolutely nothing to do with him. I am aware that it is a difficult situation, but Haas had no choice but to do what he did. Separation was the only correct option. From a sporting point of view, it could also be a good decision for the team”, Ralf told ‘Sky Sports Germany’.

Mazepin has also spoken out on social media about his dismissal and claims that it was a unilateral decision and that he was ignored by the FIA authorities.

“Dear fans and supporters, I am very disappointed to hear that my contract in F1 has ended. Although I understand the difficulties, there was the decision of the FIA. My willingness to accept the proposed conditions to continue was completely ignored and no process was followed in this unilateral step. For those who have tried to understand me, I dedicate my eternal gratitude. I have valued my time in F1 and I hope that together we can have better times. I will say something else in the next few days”, he expressed.

The American businessman Gene Haas, owner of the Formula One team, confirmed that the Brazilian driver Pietro Fittipaldi will take the place of the Russian Nikita Mazepin in the pre-season tests that will take place this week in Bahrain. It is still unknown if Fittipaldi will be the driver who will occupy the position of Mazepin in the season.
