In the United States, Social Security advance payments are only reserved for certain very specific situations, normally associated with the Income Security Program Supplemental (SSI). According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), the entity in charge of granting this type of benefit, there are only four situations in which a worker can make this type of request:
1. Presumptive Disability (PD) or Presumptive Blindness (PC): Eligibility to receive payments under these conditions will not depend on financial need, but on the seriousness of the applicant’s situation , who must apply to be evaluated by SSA’s Disability Determination Services (DDS). During the period that said evaluation lasts (up to a maximum of 6 months) the applicant can receive payments under the idea of presumption of the condition. These payments are issued through Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SSA also has an extended list of conditions that may also qualify under this category.
two. Emergency Advance: Emergency advance payments are intended to cover situations related to financial problems, mainly when the applicant cannot cover basic needs (food, clothing, housing , medical care). They are granted only once. Applicants who owe Supplemental Security Income payments to the SSA also qualify under this category.
3. Immediate payment: Financial problems are also considered as a reason to request immediate payments of Social Security benefits, specifically SSI. These payments can be higher than $1200,00; that is, greater than the emergency advance payments and can be granted both to workers who already enjoy SSI and to new applicants.
4. Accelerated reinstatement: workers can request advance payments if they no longer enjoyed any Social Security benefit because they were receiving earnings from a lucrative activity that suddenly ended. Under this modality, a reinstatement of such benefits is made if the SSA considers that you are eligible. To do so, there is no need to make a new request, the interested party only has to call to be attended by an agent who will guide them through the process.
How to request an advance payment?
1. Go to the official page to apply for benefits from the Social Security Administration. When accessing it, the terms and conditions to which the applicant submits are displayed. After accepting them, you must click “Next”.
two. The page will display a new window with several options to facilitate the process. The first one is “Preparing” and is created to guide applicants in gathering information and documents needed to enroll in SSA’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
3. When the applicant has the necessary documents and information, they must click on the second option “Apply and complete ”. It has the button “Start a new request”, with which you can access the form for the first time. It also allows you to save an application to complete it later through the “Return to saved application process” option.
Once the application is received, the SSA will evaluate the case and determine if the applicant is eligible to receive the advance payment based on your particular situation. These payments are temporary and, as soon as they are approved, the SSA can reject applications that do not meet the required urgency.
