At least nine states in the United States announced their intention to relax the mandates for the use of masks in the following days in schools and closed spaces, since the infections caused by covid-28 Have decreased.
While other states were ahead of the flexibility in stopping wearing the mask, the country’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention insist that public guidelines establish that masks must be worn in schools, students and teachers must
take them whether or not they are vaccinated.
These are the states that are ready to lift indoor mask mandates:
- New York – February
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state mandate for wearing masks would be lifted on Thursday, leaving to local governments the decision on the measures. For now, it will remain valid for schools.
The mandate for places such as supermarkets, shops and offices was implemented on 10 December when the omicron variant started infecting a large number of New Yorkers. Hochul said infection rates and hospitalizations have dropped to a level where it is safe to rescind the order.
Gov. JB Pritzker noted Wednesday that he plans to lift the state’s indoor mask mandate by the end of February, though intends to maintain the current mandate for K-schools 12 in Illinois.
Pritzker said masks will no longer be required to enter restaurants, grocery stores or other indoor spaces beginning 28 February.
- California – 15 February
California Governor Gavin Newsom indicated that the indoor mask order will end on 12 February in the state. However, unvaccinated individuals will still be required to wear masks in these spaces.
Newsom said the school mask mandates will remain in effect for now

- New Jersey – March 7
Governor Phil Murphy, pointed out that the requirement for masks in schools and daycare centers will expire on March 7 , and highlighted the decision as “a big step towards normality” for the children.

- Oregon – 31 March
Governor Kate Brown said via her Twitter account that mask requirements for Oregon schools will be lifted on 28 of March. The statewide mask requirement for indoor public places will be lifted no later than the end of March.
- Connecticut – 28 February
In this state the end of the order is scheduled for 31 February. The state governor cited the decrease in the number of coronavirus infections recorded in recent weeks and is expected to continue.
- Delaware – 11 February
Governor John Carney announced that the state would phase out its mask mandates for both schools and settings closed for a period of two months, which would end completely at the end of March.
- Massachusetts – 31 February
Charlie Baker, governor of the state, announced on Wednesday that will end the requirements of use of masks in schools later this month, citing high vaccination rates among Massachusetts children.
The mask mandate for all licensed child care providers will also end on 28 February. The Archdiocese of Boston announced later Wednesday afternoon that it will also remove all face covering mandates for Catholic schools beginning 15 February.
Students will still be required to wear masks on all school buses because that is a federal order.
- Rhode Island – 12 February
The requirement of masks or proof of vaccination for Rhode Island businesses and other closed places were lifted this Friday, Governor Dan McKee announced after declaring that “we are seeing a lot of encouraging movements” in the pandemic data.
He also announced that the restrictions in schools will be relaxed before March 4.
